The
skin must be inspected for defects before it can be cut. Cows have wounds and mosquito bites
that only become apparent when the hide is tanned. and crocodile skin with insect bites
are unacceptable. All defects are
circled with a white marker and cut out. All
skins are cut by press machines except for crocodile and alligator, which are
extremely fragile and valuable. Instead,
reptile skins are done by hand using a paring knife or press knives. Due to their constant demand, the
Kelly and Crocodile Porosus Hermes Birkin bags have cutting plates with subtle differences in size
because different skins vary in elasticity.
The saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) fromAustralia is
the most expensive reptile skin to work with. It has square scales in the
middle of the belly and four to five small round scales down either side. It’s aesthetically more attractive
because the scales are more symmetrical. The
second is the Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) from Africa . It has big square scales in the middle
and then two lines of big round scales down the side. The third most expensive is the
American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), which comes from a farm owned
by Hermes in Florida . It has small rectangular scales in the middle and
smaller, oval-shaped scales down the sides.
